About

MY EXPERIENCE:

As a newspaper reporter, I’ve covered everything from education, government, business, real estate, health and medicine and crime to features and consumer news.

Since 2009, I have covered public policy, business, social issues and politics as a freelance correspondent for the New York Timesthe Christian Science Monitor, the Washington Post, WisPolitics.comWisBusiness.com, INSIGHT Into Diversity, DiversityISQuill MagazineNew York Daily NewsMilwaukee MagazineAARP Bulletin, and other top quality publications. In 2018, I was invited to be a contributing writer for the highly respected CQ Researcher (formerly Congressional Quarterly), founded by Nelson Poynter.

I am a former government and education reporter, as well as a multiplatform copy editor for the Pulitzer prize-winning Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, a former assistant managing editor at the Janesville Gazette daily, which was named to Editor & Publisher “Ten That Do It Right” in 2003, one of the years I was there. I am a former reporter and assistant news editor for the Waukesha Freeman daily, which during my tenure, consistently won best overall newspaper in Wisconsin for its circulation category.

In addition to news writing and reporting, I am former managing editor of Wisconsin CPA magazine, the Medical College of Wisconsin publications World and Focus; and I produced, wrote and edited award-winning magazines and annual reports for Goodwill Industries of Southeast Wisconsin and Metropolitan Chicago.

MY PHILOSOPHY:

Unlike some freelancers, who openly profess to “repackaging” old information in infinite ways, I am committed to imparting information to the reader in every piece I do.

This is what makes a news-gathering approach different from simply writing.  Although I am passionate about the glorious use of the words and committed to the strict perfection of grammar, spelling and punctuation, these things mean little if facts are wrong or the reader is left with questions.

As a reader — or as a client seeking a freelance writer — you’ve seen too many articles, whether published by bloggers, online magazines or even mainstream printed magazines, that are little more than opinion pieces or “advertorials:” advertising disguised as editorial articles.

Is the only source of the information the writer’s own experience or opinion, or possibly just one outside source?

Are the points of the article or blog backed up by facts?

Facts that the writer uncovered, not simply links to other articles on the topic or recycled information that you already know.

Did you feel the article was worth your time? I am not only a writer. I am a reporter. I dig for facts. I observe what is happening and ask questions until I understand. I offer this information in a timely, well-written manner that is informative, substantiated and objective.
